Chitwan National Park is a preserved area in the Terai Lowlands of south-central Nepal, known for its biodiversity. It was declared UNESCO Natural Heritage site in 1979 and covering 932 sq km. Its dense forests and grassy plains are home to rare mammals like one-horned rhinos, sloth bear, leopard and Bengal tigers. The park shelters numerous bird species, including the giant hornbill. Dugout canoes traverse the northern Rapti River, home to crocodiles. It can be reached by 20 min flight or 150 km by road from Kathmandu.
