Trip Introduction

Upper Mustang mountain biking tour. In March 1992, the ‘forbidden’ kingdom of Mustang was opened to the outside world. Now, for the first time in recent history, foreign travelers are able to visit Lo Manthang, the seat of an ancient kingdom dating back to the 15th century. Now we take you to bike one of the most beautiful part on earth. Mountain biking in Upper mustang offers beautiful nature, ancient Tibetan culture, medieval villages, unexplored cave, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, chortens, ancient art, painting and its tradition. The people of Upper Mustang are called Bhotias and those from Lo are called Lobas. They speak various dialects of Tibetan. Historically, their art and culture flourished due to contact with traders, monks and religious masters passing between Tibet and India, or between Ladakh and Bhutan. The walled city still stands as a testimony to Lo-Mangtang’s prosperity and rich cultural heritage the area is part of the Tibetan plateau, and is high, dry and beautiful.

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: ARRIVAL DAY IN KATHMANDU (1,400m). Overnight at hotel.
DAY 02: DRIVE TO POKHARA (920m). Overnight at hotel.
DAY 03: POKHARA FLY TO JOMSOM & BIKE TO KAGBENI (2,810m). Overight at Lodge.
Day 04: RIDE FROM KAGBENI TO MUKTINITH (3,800M). Overight at Lodge.
Day 05: RIDE FROM MUKTINATH TO CHAILE (3,050M) – Via Gyu La Pass (4,077m). Overight at Lodge.
Day 06: RIDE FROM CHELE TO GELING (3,807m). Overight at Lodge.
Day 07: RIDE FROM GELING TO DHAKMAR (3,806m). Overight at Lodge.
Day 08: RIDE FROM DHAKMAR TO LOMANGTHANG (3,700m) via Ghar Gompa. Overight at Lodge.
Day 09: RIDE FROM LO-MANTHANG – DAY TRIP TO GHOM. Overight at Lodge.
Day 10: RIDE FROM LO-MANTHANG – YARA (3,650M). Overight at Lodge.

We will be staying at 2/3 star hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and in tea-houses during the tour. All rooms are on twin-shared basis. Single bedroom will be arranged on request and will cost additional. Utmost Adventure will arrange rooms with attached washrooms; however, tea-houses at most places only have shared washing and toilet facilities.


In Kathmandu and Pokahra, breakfast will be available. All meals will be provided during biking tour including tea, coffee. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners taking place for guests. While on trek, we have breakfast and dinner in the camp where we spend the night and lunch on our way to next destination. Authentic Nepalese, Tibetan, continental meals are common choices in the menu.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Upper Mustang Mountain biking tour is a moderate biking tour. Biker who can ride up to 5-6 hours a day on an uphill and downhill trail, confident on rocky descents, exposed single track, loose surfaces will consider this trip fulfilling and enjoyable. It is a good idea to prepare for the tour by jogging and biking regularly at least for a month prior to the start. Mountain biking to the Upper Mustang should be relatively moderate for those who have experience in biking in single track in mountainous region. Determination, good physical health, positive attitude and average physical fitness are good preconditions for a successful accomplishment of the tour. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Utmost Adventure before booking the tour.

Best Time to Travel

The best time for biking to Upper Mustang is during spring (March to May) and autumn (August to November). The temperature is moderate and guarantees amazing views throughout the trip.
